440C, VG10 of X50CrMoV15: drie kopersbriefjes, drie specificaties

Drie kopersbriefjes - vaatwasser-veilige volume sets, mid-market retail, premium lijnen - en de staalgraad om op elk spec sheet te schrijven.

Steel grade is the last line of the specification, not the first. Three things decide it: your retail band, whether the box says dishwasher-safe, and how many units you can commit to one grade. Answer those three, then send the brief. Here is how three typical briefs resolve.

Brief 1 — houseware brand, dishwasher-safe claim, 1,000 pieces. Specify X50CrMoV15. European buyers read that designation without asking a follow-up question, and it holds up through a home dishwasher. Do not chase maximum edge retention and a dishwasher claim in the same email — pick the corrosion side. At volume, the mill grades you will actually see quoted are 4Cr13 and 3Cr13: a 10-piece Damascus-pattern set with a green resin handle runs 1,000 pieces in 10–20 days on 4Cr13 with a 430 stainless bolster. Ask which mill grade sits behind the trade name and get that name printed on the drawing.

Brief 2 — knife retailer, 300–500 units per SKU, hand wash assumed. Specify 440C. It carries a high-carbon stainless claim on the box without the VG10 price, and that gap is what pays for the packaging. This is the volume where you refresh rather than stockpile: a 7-inch Damascus chef's knife at 300 pieces runs 15–30 days, so a handle or finish change between seasons stays affordable. Ask for the mill certificate with the heat number, and check that the certificate names the same grade as your purchase order.

Brief 3 — premium line, small first run, the spec sheet is part of the marketing. Specify VG10 and accept the cost. VG10 usually arrives as a core inside a clad blade, so write the construction into the spec: core grade, cladding, country of steel origin. Keep the first order tight — a 200-piece run is enough to test a premium line, and a 10-inch slicer at that quantity is a 15–30 day order. Anything larger ties up cash in a grade you have not sold yet.

What goes in the sample request. Three lines: steel grade plus mill certificate, first-order quantity, target retail band. Leave hardness targets and finish claims for the second email. Zenttop Industrial samples free in three days from its Yangjiang plant.

Before you write the brief, answer one question: does your packaging say dishwasher-safe? That single word removes one of the three grades immediately.
